Spring 2008

EE 459 Embedded Systems Design Laboratory is the Senior Capstone Design class for the Electrical Engineering Computer Architecture & Organization.

You can visit the course website here.

The following excerpt is taken from the course website:

This is a Capstone Design course in which teams of students will do a hardware/software project under the supervision of the instructor. This class gives the students an opportunity to bring together skills and knowledge they have learned in several other classes to build a moderately complex digital hardware/software system.

During the semester the students will be required to:

  • Design the system using CAD tools or on paper.
  • Make an oral presentation to the instructor and class on their proposed design including a project timeline and cost estimate.
  • Determine what parts will be required and select vendors.
  • Construct the project in the EE 459L lab
  • Debug the project and get it working.
  • Demonstrate their project to the instructor and other students.
  • Do an oral presentation to the class on the details of their project.
  • Submit a written report including circuit diagrams, software listings and a detailed analysis of the cost of manufacturing the project in large quantities.

The above steps are meant to give the student an experience that is similar to what they might encounter when employed as a design engineer. The class will strongly emphasize the importance of teamwork and communication between the students as a necessary aspect of the project.

For the first time starting this semester - EE 459L will be collaborating this semester with Marketing 446 (Practicum in New Product Development) in the USC Marshall School of Business. The goal is to give students a more complete exposure to the decisions that go into developing a new product. Project teams in EE 459L will be paired up with teams of students in MKT 446. The MKT 446 student teams will perform market research and analysis to determine design requirements for a marketable product. The engineering and marketing teams will work together throughout the semester to produce a final product that both operates as specified from a technical standpoint, and incorporates the features that make it a marketable product.
